One of the solutions to racial and gender stereotyping in commentary could be requiring diversity training for commentators, journalists, and media producers. It would also be helpful to increase diversity in the sports media workforce so there is a more balanced workplace with people from different backgrounds. It is very important that we regulate how and what is allowed to be said because language is a powerful tool that shapes our perceptions and influences the way we think about the world around us. In the sports industry, the use of language plays a crucial role in shaping public opinion, reinforcing stereotypes, and perpetuating biases. However, it also has the potential to challenge these stereotypes and promote a more inclusive and diverse sports media.

Below is a video containing additional evidence of common stereotypes that go unnoticed in everyday life.

One way in which language shapes perceptions in sports is through the use of descriptive terms. For example, when describing female athletes, words like "graceful" and "beautiful" are often used, focusing on their appearance rather than their athletic abilities. On the other hand, male athletes are often described as "strong" and "powerful," emphasizing their physical prowess. These gendered descriptions not only reinforce traditional gender roles but also undermine the achievements and skills of female athletes. This case study has evidence of these gender biases in sports media. It shows how commentators are more likely to take about men than women during a competition or game. https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1460-2466.2003.tb02911.x

Another aspect of language that shapes perceptions in sports is the use of racial and ethnic stereotypes. Certain sports, such as basketball and football, are often associated with specific racial or ethnic groups. These stereotypes not only limit opportunities for athletes from diverse backgrounds but also perpetuate harmful biases.

 Additional Evidence

This study shows how Black players, especially male players are shown as more aggressive and hostile due to their race. These descriptions are evidence of stereotypes that are still being preserved today. https://doi.org/10.1177/0193723513491750

This study was on the differences in coverage between White and Black male players as well as White and Black female players. The study showed that Black women were more athletic, powerful, and fast while White women were hardworking and had mental skills. https://doi.org/10.1080/106461701753287714

Fighting for a better future

To challenge these stereotypes, it is important to use language that focuses on the achievements and abilities of athletes rather than their gender. Instead of describing a female athlete as "graceful," we can highlight her determination, skill, and dedication. By using inclusive language, we can shift the narrative and promote a more equal and fair representation of athletes. To combat these stereotypes, it is crucial to use language that celebrates the diversity of athletes and acknowledges their individual talents and achievements. Instead of focusing on racial or ethnic backgrounds, we should highlight the hard work, dedication, and skill that athletes bring to their respective sports. By doing so, we can challenge stereotypes and promote a more inclusive and diverse sports media.

In addition to descriptive terms and racial stereotypes, language also plays a role in shaping perceptions through the use of narratives and storytelling. The stories we tell about athletes can either reinforce or challenge stereotypes. For example, stories that highlight the struggles and triumphs of athletes from marginalized communities can challenge stereotypes and inspire others. As consumers of sports media, we have the power to demand more inclusive and diverse narratives. By supporting media outlets that prioritize inclusive language and diverse storytelling, we can contribute to a more equitable and fair representation of athletes. In conclusion, the power of words in shaping perceptions in sports cannot be underestimated. Language has the ability to reinforce stereotypes or challenge them, perpetuate biases or promote inclusivity. As consumers of sports media, we have a responsibility to demand more thoughtful and inclusive language. By doing so, we can contribute to a more diverse and inclusive sports media that celebrates the achievements and talents of all athletes, regardless of their gender, race, or background.

To wrap it up, below is a video highlighting how we can better represent women in sports today.
